Step 4: Get Rid of Distractions

Now that you have reduced your smartphone use, you can start reducing your digital technology use a little bit more. You can continue by imposing no smartphone use during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

You can take it up a notch by getting rid of distractions like push notifications, unnecessary alarms, and social media alerts. Turn them all off and keep only the really important ones.

Step 5: Set a Time for Social Media Use

Like I said earlier, digital technology has its uses—even social media. Social media is one way to connect and/or reconnect with friends and family—especially long lost ones. What you’re trying to avoid when doing a digital detox is the overuse of social media.

Set certain times during the day when you can allow yourself to use social media. Let’s say 30 minutes late in the morning and maybe 30 minutes at the end of the day when you get home. Think of it as your catch-up time with friends and family.
